Reporters Without Borders (RSF) translated into Chinese the Handbook on Trauma and Journalism, published by the DART Centre. This handbook provides journalists with advice on how to deal with trauma while reporting, with an emphasis on ethics, mental health, and safety.

The DART (Direct Action and Research Training) Centre for Journalism and Trauma, part of Columbia University’s Graduate School of Journalism, is a global network and resource centre focused on enhancing ethical, compassionate reporting on trauma, conflict, and tragedy. Founded in 1999, it supports journalists worldwide in reporting sensitive topics with care, emphasising mental health, safety, and press freedom. DART Centre provides journalists with information on trauma’s psychological aspects and specialised training programmes.

Its handbook “Trauma & Journalism – A Guide For Journalists, Editors & Managers” offers valuable advice on how to report on trauma, to cover rape and sexual violence, combat clichés, as well as deal with a journalist’s own emotional wounds and self-care. This handbook ends with appendices on covering armed conflict and war, dealing with families and partners when on assignment, handling images of trauma, dealing with alcoholism, and presents a special focus on women reporters’ additional challenges.
